Terrence Sweeney, M.D., is a neonatologist who serves as medical director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Swedish Medical Center/First Hill Campus. This 46-bed, Level III NICU is one of only a few in Washington state equipped to handle the most premature or ill newborns.
Although Dr. Sweeney spends the largest portion of his time on direct patient care, as medical director his responsibilities include coordinating education for staff, overseeing NICU medical personnel and developing the neonatal program.
Dr. Sweeney has been on staff at Swedish since 1985. He is also in private practice as part of Pediatrix Medical Group, a multiphysician practice that focuses on the medical needs of children. Dr. Sweeney is board-certified in pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine. His research interest has included developing clinically practical techniques for measuring pulmonary function in premature and ill newborns.
Dr. Sweeney is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received his medical degree from the University of Washington School of Medicine. His internship and residency in pediatrics — as well as his fellowship in neonatology — were all completed at the Stanford University Medical Center.
Among his other affiliations, Dr. Sweeney is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the King County Medical Society and the Society of Pediatric Research.
