Patricia Dawson, M.D., PH.D.
Breast Surgeon, Medical Director, Breast Cancer Program Leader
Patricia Dawson, M.D., is a surgeon at the Swedish Cancer Institute. She practices at the Breast Center at Swedish/Cherry Hill, where she also serves as medical director. In addition she serves as medical director of breast surgery for Swedish, and leads Swedish's Breast Cancer Program.
Since 1994, Dr. Dawson has focused her surgical practice on diseases of the breast, with clinical interests in breast cancer, sentinel lymph node biopsy and clinical cultural competency.
Dr. Dawson is board-certified in general surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. She is a clinical faculty member at the University of Washington School of Medicine and at Bastyr University. She is also author of the book Forged by the Knife: The Experience of Surgical Residency from the Perspective of a Woman of Color (Open Hand Publishers; 10/99).
In 2005, Swedish-affiliated physicians and nurses nominated Dr. Dawson as the recipient of the medical center's first-ever Physician of the Year Award, which was established to recognize outstanding physicians and acknowledge their excellence in patient care, humanitarian efforts and leadership.
A graduate of Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa., Dr. Dawson received her medical degree from the New Jersey Medical School. She also holds a master's degree in organizational development, a certificate in Gestalt therapy and a Ph.D. in human and organizational systems.
Among her other affiliations, Dr. Dawson is a member of the Association of Women Surgeons, the American College of Women's Health Physicians, the Washington State Medical Society and Physicians for Social Responsibility. She serves on a number of volunteer boards, including The Cross Cultural Health Care Program and the University of Washington Women's Center.
