John Wynn, M.D., is medical director of the Swedish Cancer Institute Department of PsychoOncology, located on the Swedish Medical Center/First Hill Campus.
In this role, Dr. Wynn is responsible for developing programs to help patients and families cope with the cancer experience. He also attends to the educational and emotional needs of professionals working in the highly demanding field of cancer care.
Board-certified in both internal medicine and psychiatry, Dr. Wynn has a private practice in psychiatry and organizational consultation. His clinical interests include anxiety disorders, depression, insight-oriented psychotherapy and psychopharmacology. His organizational interests include the dynamics of leadership in the workplace as well as systems and psychoanalytic perspectives on organizational dysfunction. Dr. Wynn is clinical professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Washington School of Medicine, where he has been on faculty since 1994.
Among other affiliations, Dr. Wynn belongs to the American Psychiatric Association, the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine and the American Psychosocial Oncology Society.
Dr. Wynn earned his bachelor's degree in philosophy from Yale University and his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago. He then did his residency in psychiatry at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute and Hospital, where he held faculty positions before relocating to Seattle in 1990.
