Gordon Irving, M.D., is an anesthesiologist who serves as medical director of the Swedish Pain Center: Consultations and Interventional Therapies. The program is one of the largest interdisciplinary pain centers in the Northwest and the site of key clinical research trials.


As medical director, Dr. Irving is responsible for assisting in the development of standardized pain-management protocols throughout the Swedish system, helping ensure federal compliance on pain standards for all patients being treated at Swedish, keeping the Pain Center at the forefront of knowledge and research in the field of pain management and enabling health-care providers to improve their treatment of difficult pain patients.

Dr. Irving has been on staff at Swedish since 1998. He also serves as a clinical associate professor in the Anesthesiology Department at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Before joining Swedish, he was an associate professor and head of the Pain Center at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston.

Board-certified in anesthesiology and pain management, Dr. Irving has additional certification as an independent medical examiner, as well as in sports medicine and hyperbaric medicine. His research activities have included studies on acute and chronic pain, cancer pain, sports injuries and physiology. He has lectured nationally and internationally more than 200 times on a variety of topics, from sports medicine to pain management. He has also published numerous articles and book chapters in addition to authoring the book Pain Management for the Practicing Physician (Churchill Livingstone; 01/97).

Dr. Irving is a graduate of the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne Medical School in England. He completed his internship and specialization at Groote Schuur Hospital, University of Cape Town in Cape Town, South Africa. He also holds a diploma in business management from Damelin Management School in Cape Town.

Among his other affiliations, Dr. Irving is a member of the South African Medical and Dental Society, British General Medical Council, American Academy of Pain Medicine, American Pain Society, International Association for the Study of Pain, International Spinal Injection Society and the American Society for Regional Anesthesia.
