Chief of Neuroscience
Swedish Neuroscience Institute

David W. Newell, M.D., is Chief of Neuroscience of the Swedish Neuroscience Institute. He was previously professor of neurological surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine. In addition to directing the university’s Cerebrovascular Lab, he was chief of neurosurgery at Harborview Medical Center.

Dr. Newell focuses primarily on minimally invasive surgical treatments of the cerebrovascular systems, with special expertise in cerebral aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, and bypass.

Dr. Newell has won numerous honors, awards and distinctions and has been named one of the "Best Doctors in America." He was the recipient of 1989 National Stroke Association Fellowship Award and the 1990 William P. Van Wagenen Fellowship from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.

He is the principal investigator for many clinical trials and holds multiple NIH grants. He is an author of numerous medical journal publications and books, including the No. 1 medical textbook on brain aneurysms titled "Management of Cerebral Aneurysms" (Elsevier Inc., 2004). And he currently serves on the Medical Advisory Board of Directors for The Brain Aneurysm Foundation.

Dr. Newell recently completed his term as the 58th president of the Western Neurological Society.  In October 2010, Dr. Newell delivered the presidential address and presided over the society's annual meeting in Santa Fe, NM.

Dr. Newell’s current research investigates cerebrovascular control mechanisms, including cerebral autoregulation and non-invasive estimation of intracranial pressure using Transcranial Doppler, which analyzes blood flow in the brain. His basic science research interests include mechanisms of neuronal tissue damage during ischemia (a condition in which the blood flow is restricted to a part of the body), anoxia (the absence of oxygen supply to an organ or a tissue) and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) evaluated by hippocampal slice cultures.

Dr. Newell received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1982 and completed an eight-year residency in neurosurgery at the University of Washington (U.W.). He was appointed to the faculty of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the U.W. in 1990.
