David Luthy, M.D., is an OB/GYN physician who serves as medical director of obstetrics and gynecology at Swedish Medical Center/First Hill Campus. He is also director of Swedish's Division of Perinatal Medicine, a position he has held since joining the medical center in 1982.

Dr. Luthy is in private practice as part of Obstetrix/Pediatrix Medical Group, where he specializes in high-risk pregnancies. He is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology as well as in maternal and fetal medicine. He is a clinical professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Washington (U.W.) School of Medicine, where he has been teaching or managing medical-training programs since 1978.

Dr. Luthy has been widely published and serves as an editorial consultant for numerous medical journals, including the Journal of the American Medical Association, the New England Journal of Medicine, the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American Journal of Medical Genetics. As part of his research, he received a $1 million grant from the National Center for Health Care Research to study the effect of fetal monitoring on infant development and infant mortality.

Dr. Luthy is a graduate of Grinnell College in Iowa. He earned his medical degree at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago and did his postgraduate training — including a fellowship in maternal and fetal medicine and a fellowship in medical genetics — at U.W.-affiliated hospitals.
