Laryngeal or tracheal stenosis

Laryngeal or tracheal stenosis refers to narrowing of the central air passages.  Narrowing may occur at different levels of the windpipe (trachea).  Narrowing may be caused from extrinsic pressure on the airway or from narrowing within the airway itself.  There are multiple causes for this condition.

Laryngeal stenosis is a congenital or acquired narrowing of the airway that may affect the supraglottis, glottis, and/or subglottis. It can be defined as a partial or circumferential narrowing of the endolaryngeal airway and may be congenital or acquired. The subglottis is the most common site of involvement.

An endoscopic evaluation of the airway in the operating room is typically an essential part of evaluation. Treatment via an endoscopic or an open surgical approach is dependent on the patient’s symptoms, site of involvement, and the degree of stenosis.
