Where do nurse-midwives work?

Nurse-midwives work in a variety of settings such as hospitals, public health clinics such as Planned Parenthood, independent private practices and doctor practices. They teach and conduct research at universities, develop policy and work internationally, caring for women and training traditional birth attendants.

Is it safe to have my baby with a nurse-midwife?

Of course! Certified nurse-midwives have a well-documented record of safety. The World Health Organization supports the use of midwives around the world to reduce rates of maternal and infant morbidity and mortality. Nurse-midwives work closely with physicians so that if complications arise, specialized care is available.

I have heard the term “doula.” Is a doula a nurse-midwife?

No. A doula provides physical and emotional support to women and their partners before, during and just after childbirth. They offer information, assistance and advice on topics such as breathing, relaxation, movement and positioning. They do not give medical advice or perform clinical tasks. Doulas and midwives often work together as their philosophy and practice are complementary.

What if something goes wrong?

Certified nurse-midwives are trained to recognize signs of complications in pregnancy and labor. At Swedish/Ballard, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that if complications arise, our certified nurse-midwives do collaboratively consult with physicians if necessary and they have full access to technological assistance.

Do health insurance plans cover nurse-midwives?

All Washington-based insurance plans, including Medicaid, are required by state law to reimburse for licensed nurse-midwifery services. Many out of state insurance plans also provide coverage for midwifery services. Washington state law also mandates access to a certified nurse-midwife without a primary-care provider referral. Your coverage may vary depending on the terms of your plan. It’s best to call your insurance provider for verification.
