General surgery vs. specialized surgery: What’s the difference?

If you’ve heard the term “general surgeon” and wondered if that’s the sort of doctor you need, you might want to substitute the words “abdominal surgeon” instead. At Swedish, our general surgeons can take care of relatively routine conditions, such as appendicitis, hernias, and the removal of gallbladders. But many of our general surgeons are also very well equipped to handle the most complex cases involving colon cancer, Crohn’s disease, breast cancer, and removal of the thyroid gland. So, in a way, general surgeons are specialists who focus on the torso, while specialist surgeons focus on other body parts.
