CLINICAL PASTORAL EDUCATION

The purpose of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is to engage students in self-discovery and to provide an opportunity to learn about pastoral care under supervision. Level I CPE focuses on evaluating and developing personal and pastoral identities. Level II CPE focuses on developing and refining ministry skills.

Clinical Pastoral Education students are expected to reflect on their interpersonal relationships as they minister as part of the interdisciplinary health-care team. In addition to clinical experiences, students are given opportunities to learn about selected issues from experts within the medical center and from the community.

The typical peer group is made up of people who have an undergraduate degree, recent theological education and some clarity regarding career goals.

Currently, Swedish Medical Center CPE offers:

  • Full-time units of CPE that require a 40+ hour per week commitment from students during their clinical pastoral experience; students participate in either an 11-week internship unit or a nine-month residency program
  • Student in Supervisory Education (SES) training, which requires a 40+ hour per week commitment from students during their training. Students participate in a two-year SES curriculum.

Intern chaplains receive meal coverage of $6 per day in the Swedish cafeterias, along with free bus pass tokens, or free parking in an assigned parking garage.

Curriculum and Program Schedule

During the course of the program, students take part in:

  • Direct ministry: students work with patients, families and staff
  • On-call responsibilities: students share 24-hour emergency response throughout the hospital, including evenings and weekends
  • Peer-group work: students participate in verbatim seminars, interpersonal group meetings and theological reflection
  • Clinical supervision: students receive group and individual supervision in all areas of training
  • Didactic seminars: presentations are offered on selected issues relating to ministry and hospital chaplaincy
  • Reading and papers: students are expected to do supplemental reading and prepare papers
