Incontinence following Prostatectomy
Urinary incontinence can occur after prostate resection
because of dammage to the bladder sphincter. The
muscles of the pelvic floor can take over some of this function.
Proper training of these muscles can be beneficial when
incontinence does not resolve. This method of treatment
for incontinence has proven quite successful and there are
no side effects. Many patients note improvement as their
muscle awareness increases, though it may occur
over a period of 6-8 weeks.
Typical treatment includes:
-
Biofeedback - helps patients learn how to use the
correct muscles and measure progress -
Electrical Stimulation- used when muscles are
very weak a gentle therapeutic current to promote
muscle contraction and strengthening -
