Incontinence
If you suffer from incontinence, the inability to control
the bladder or bowel, you are not alone. Incontinence is a
very common problem that affects an estimated 25 million
American men and women of all ages. Evaluation and
treatment are available at Outpatient Rehabilitation Services at
Ballard, Cherry Hill, First Hill, and West Seattle Rehabilitation.
During the first visit the therapist will gather information
about the frequency and type of incontinence expereinced.
Types of incontinence treated:
- Fecal
- Urinary
- Mixed
- Stress
- Urge
- Dysfunctional Voiding
Typically a pelvic floor examination will be
performed. Each person will be instructed in how
to perform pelvic floor exercises. In addition the therapist
will use other treatment tools to ensure the best results.
These tools may include:
- Biofeedback - helps patients learn how to use the
correct muscles and measure progress - Behavioral training- you may be asked to keep
a diary of your eating, drinking and toileting habits - Electrical stimulation - In some cases where the
muscles are very weak,a gentle therapeutic electrical
current passed through internal or external electrodes
can be helpful in training the muscle to contract
and get stronger - Home exercise program - Tips on how to improve
bladder control and individualized exercise prescription
