Surgical Approaches
There are three primary surgical approach options for hip replacement: posterior, anterior lateral, and anterior. There are advantages and disadvantages to each approach. Your surgeon will discuss options and make a recommendation based on your particular case.
Posterior Approach
Most common, the posterior approach involves accessing the joint through a curved incision across the patient's buttock.
Anterior Lateral Approach
In the anterior lateral approach, the joint is accessed through the patient's side.
Anterior Approach
In an anterior approach surgical procedures, the patient is positioned flat (supine) on his or her back, and small incisions are made on the front of the thigh.
