Hip Resurfacing
There are distinct advantages associated with hip resurfacing, but it is not an option for all patients. Hip resurfacing has the most successful outcomes with patients are that under 60, have a large frame with strong, healthy bones. Patients that are older with smaller frames and weakened or damaged bones have a higher risk of post-operative complications. Other considerations include:
- Components used in a hip resurfacing procedure can wear out or loosen over time, which would require an additional and potentially more complicated operation
- Studies indicate that patients have a more normal walking pattern following hip resurfacing versus total hip replacement
- There is a risk for femoral neck fracture with hip resurfacing -- which would be addressed by the patient subsequently having a total hip replacement
