Management of Symptoms
The symptoms of multiple sclerosis are some of the most varied of any disease. Each patient has different symptoms depending on the location of the areas of damage caused by the multiple sclerosis. This damage can occur anywhere in the brain, spinal cord or optic nerves. The number of lesions, size of lesions, degree of damage within each lesion, and location of lesions differs with each patient. Furthermore, these symptoms occur with random timing so that each patient has unique symptoms that can change in unpredictable ways.
There are three strategies to decrease the symptoms of multiple sclerosis.
- Use disease-modifying therapies to lessen the number of multiple sclerosis attacks, and thus the severity of symptoms.
- If attacks occur, treat the attack to reverse the damage.
- If symptoms persist, treat the symptoms directly.
