MS Wellness Center
Through our MS Wellness Center, we help people affected by MS and related disorders achieve their highest level of wellbeing. The MS Wellness Center at the Swedish Neuroscience Institute is designed to support and foster the health and well-being of people with MS and their families, as well as build a sense of community.
There are several components to the Wellness Center. People with MS may participate in any of these programs. You do not need to be a patient at our Center to participate.
Physical Wellness
Physical activity through exercise is important in maintaining function. Through our physical wellness program we encourage people with all levels of ability to exercise. Our wellness center gym is equipped with exercise equipment for all levels of ability, and our staff are familiar with the issues of exercise in MS. This program includes:
- Custom exercise programs. During three visits with our MS physical therapists and exercise physiologists, people are evaluated for exercise goals and physical abilities. A custom-designed exercise program is tailored to meet each participant’s needs and limitations. This is an excellent way to learn what exercises or equipment work for you.
- Exercise group. Graduates of the custom exercise program often continue to meet with our weekly MS exercise group. This provides fun and exercise in our fully equipped gym.
- Resources for those with limited strength. Our MS physical therapists are skilled at developing exercise programs for those with limited strength. Our specialized equipment includes weight-supported treadmill, functional electrical stimulation (FES) bike, motorized exercise bike, egometers, adult tricycle and standing frames so that people with all levels of ability can participate in exercise.
- Yoga class. A weekly yoga class meets in our facility. This is an excellent way to have fun and increase flexibility and wellbeing.
- Movement and music class. This class blends movement to music to increase flexibility and mobility.
Nutrition and Healthy Living
- Our MS nutritionist provides consultation on maintaining a healthy diet, use of dietary supplements and the management of weight gain or weight loss.
- Smoking cessation. Counseling and treatment for smoking cessation is available through the Wellness Center.
