Skull Base Fellowships

Swedish Neuroscience Institute (SNI) offers one- and two-year skull-base fellowships. Physicians who are fully trained in neurosurgery receive hands-on training from some of the most knowledgeable multi-disciplinary specialists in the country. The fellowship includes the diagnosis, treatment and management of patients with skull-base tumors using the latest techniques and technologies, including:

  • Microsurgery
  • Endoscopic Surgery
  • Advanced Intraoperative Imaging (iCT and iMRI) and Neuronavigation
  • Stereotactic Radiosurgery (GammaKnife® and CyberKnife®)
  • Neurotology
  • Neuro-endocrinology
  • Neuro-oncology

Skull-base fellows receive training in association with the Swedish Hearing and Skull Base Surgery Center, the Seattle Pituitary Center and the Ben and Catherine Ivy Center for Advanced Brain Tumor Treatment. SNI established these centers as the first multidisciplinary treatment and research centers in the Pacific Northwest dedicated solely to the treatment of tumors and other conditions affecting the brain, skull base and pituitary. Located adjacent to world-class research facilities, the SNI outpatient clinic provides instant access to promising new therapies, offering hope for patients with all stages of brain tumors.

Additional surgical training is included at the Seattle Science Foundation, a state-of-the-art bioskills and tele-education center located immediately adjacent to the SNI outpatient clinic. At SSF, Fellows have access to a skull base teaching laboratory and participate in ongoing hands-on courses in advanced skull-base surgical techniques. Training in stereotactic radiosurgery will occur at the Swedish Radiosurgery Center, one of the few facilities in the world to include side-by-side GammaKnife® and CyberKnife® devices.
