Neonatal Resuscitation Program™ (NRP)
The Neonatal Resuscitation Program™ (NRP) teaches the concepts and skills of neonatal resuscitation and is sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association. This course is recommended for those that have experience in a birth setting or care for newborns in the immediate postpartum period. NRP does not certify participants to perform any technique, does not imply competence to perform neonatal resuscitation, and does not determine the participant’s scope of practice.
Successful completion of the NRP requires significant advance preparation and includes several elements. First, participants study the 6th edition eTextbook or Neonatal Resuscitation Textbook. Next, participants must successfully complete an on-line examination that covers the content of the textbook or e-textbook. Once independent study and testing have been completed, participants are eligible to attend an NRP course at the Gossman Center for Advanced Healthcare Simulation. Participants must present proof of successful test completion to the instructor on the day of the course.
The class includes skills review, validation and simulation, stressing teamwork, communication and role adoption during neonatal resuscitation.
Please allow adequate time to acquire the necessary course materials, study and take the on-line examination before a scheduled course. The 6th edition eTextbook can be accessed online. Textbooks can also be obtained through many hospital libraries, or purchased directly from www.aap.org/nrp or Amazon. The on-line examination is available at the AAP website, and requires additional payment to Healthstream, which administers the actual testing.
Participants come fully prepared to the NRP course, ready to work on specific skills, and to participate as a team member in neonatal resuscitation scenarios. Scenarios are tailored to reflect participants’ practice. Simulation sessions are videotaped and debriefed. All classes are appropriate for those needing NRP provider status. Depending on your scope of practice and institutional requirements, please select from the following sessions:
NRP Provider - 3.5 hours
Lessons 1-9 are required. Cost $175
Home Birth and Birthing Center - 2 hours
Lessons 1-4 and 9 are required. Cost $150.
This class has been developed for those who provide care to newborns during home births and at birthing centers. For this class, please feel free to bring your own resuscitation bag if you prefer to practice and test with your own equipment.
