More than 30 million Americans live with the distressing – and often disabling – symptoms of chronic lung disease. The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program offers a comprehensive combination of services that can help many of them live better. Through the program’s exercise, education, nutritional counseling and peer-support components, participants learn how to successfully manage their condition and reduce symptoms. And, most important, they improve their quality of life.
Who will benefit from the program?
Candidates for the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program include people who are under a doctor’s care for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), such as emphysema, chronic bronchitis or asthma and Restrictive Lung Disease, such as Pulmonary Fibrosis. It is especially helpful to patients who continue to suffer severe respiratory symptoms, including breathing difficulty during normal daily activities. The program also addresses many of the issues that accompany chronic lung disease, such as decreased activity tolerance and social support.
How does the program work?
The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is a combination of group instruction and peer support, led by a team of multidisciplinary professionals including respiratory therapists, exercise physiologists, nurses, dietitians, behavioral specialists and a consulting pulmonologist.
Participants meet three times a week for group exercise :
- Build strength and endurance through monitored progressive exercise
- Practice pursed lip breathing techniques to reduce shortness of breath
- Learn about medications
- Participate in weekly education and peer support meetings
