Our services are available to individuals who need care, as well as to area physicians who seek expert counsel about mental-health issues.
Our specialized staff includes board-certified physicians, nurses and other professionals who are experienced in treating various behavioral-health problems with compassion and respect. Our treatment programs aim to stabilize a patient's illness, maintain the patient's personal and environmental safety, maximize functioning and promote community support and regular follow-up treatment.
Inpatient care
The inpatient psychiatric unit is located at Swedish/Cherry Hill (formerly Swedish/Providence) and features 10 private rooms in a quiet environment. Inpatient care is available on a strictly voluntary basis to patients who are 18 years of age or older. This level of care is for patients with an acute illness, for a relatively short period of time or until the patient's condition is stabilized.
Patients are involved in treatment decisions. When the patient is discharged from the hospital, follow-up by the patient's family physician or therapist is encouraged.
Detoxification
We offer detoxification through Swedish Addiction Recovery. Call 206-781-6048 for an appointment.
For patients who are addicted to alcohol or drugs, detoxification may be the first step in treatment. An experienced team of physicians, nurses and counselors supervises and assists patients in our detoxification unit at Swedish/Ballard.
Detoxification services are carefully integrated with basic medical care and specialize in opiate or sedative/hypnotic medications and street drugs. The process varies from individual to individual, but for most patients, major withdrawal symptoms disappear within three to four days. After detoxification, patients who need further inpatient treatment are referred to appropriate programs.
Psychiatric consultations
Patients being treated for physical problems may also show signs of depression or other mental-health concerns, either due to the condition or as a reaction to medication.
Physicians caring for patients admitted to Swedish can request a same-day consultation with one of our board-certified psychiatrists about medication interactions and side effects or other treatment considerations that will impact the health of their patients.
Electroconvulsive therapy
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an intensive treatment for patients with severe depression. Our experienced psychiatric and medical staff evaluate whether ECT is an appropriate option for patients. ECT is available for qualified patients on an inpatient or outpatient basis at Swedish/Cherry Hill, in our specially designed ECT clinic.
