Dr. Beatty has a longstanding record of translational and clinical research, and research administration. He maintains a clinical surgical practice in breast cancer and leads the clinical research activities in breast cancer at the SCI. These studies have included assessment of imaging techniques, surgical care and multidiciplinary care of breast cancer. Completed studies include breast imaging by magnetic resonance (MRI) and positron emission mammography (PEM), metaplastic breast cancer, micro and macrometastasis in sentinel nodes, neoadjuvant chemotherapy, post-mastectomy irradiation, and quality assessment of breast cancer care.

He has also taken the principal responsibility in breast cancer for the interface between the SCI and the fundamental research activities in breast cancer by Dr. Nicole Urban’s group at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer research Center. He has been involved in research subject recruitment, study design, interpretation of results and reports. These studies have reported a 50-gene observation that some normal breast tissue has a profile similar to a selected population of breast cancer tissue. Current studies are exploring the potential to identify breast cancer patients with increased risk of subsequent 2nd breast cancer based upon the gene profile of their normal or atypical breast tissue which in turn could have an impact upon subsequent clinical decision-making. The group is also exploring the relationship significance of erythropoietin receptors in breast cancer patients who have received adjuvant chemotherapy follow breast surgery.
