Hospitalist medicine is a rapidly growing discipline. Hospital-based specialists have emerged in a number of disciplines, including neuroscience. However, there remains a limited number of specialty providers available for 24 hour hospital coverage of neurology and neurosurgery patients. As of 2011 there were only about 550 board-certified neurointensivists nationwide, according to the United Council for Neurological Subspecialties. Night and weekend care of these patients often relies on internists, pulmonologists or hospitalists. Acute Care Neurology and Neurosurgery: From the ER to the OR to the NCCU will highlight commonly encountered problems in acute care neurology and neurosurgery, including the recognition and management of those problems.
