SEATTLE, Oct. 9, 2012 - On Tuesday, Oct. 2, Eleanor Day, 79, underwent a cochlear implant procedure at Swedish/Cherry Hill by Dr. Douglas Backous, medical director of the Center for Hearing and Skull Base Surgery. Her procedure was the world’s first live-instagrammed and live-tweeted cochlear implant (hearing restoration) surgery (click here to see a recap). This Wednesday, Oct. 10, Swedish will live stream Mrs. Day’s cochlear implant activation, in which she will potentially hear her husband’s voice without the help of hearing aids for the first time in five years. The Days have been married for 60 years.
The live-streamed viewing of Mrs. Day’s cochlear implant activation will take place from 8:30-9:30 a.m. (Pacific Time) and will be narrated on Twitter as well as through CoverItLive, a text-based chat service, to provide those with hearing loss the ability to clearly follow along. The live-stream and the accompanying narration will be hosted at www.swedish.org/SwedishHear.
Following the live-streamed activation, Mr. & Mrs. Day, Dr. Backous, Stacey Watson (audiologist) and Karen Utter (president of the Hearing Loss Association of Washington) will host two live, text-based chats to answer questions from the community about hearing loss and cochlear implants. The live text chats will take place from 10-11 a.m. and 6-7 p.m. (Pacific Time) and can be followed at www.swedish.org/SwedishHear. Narration will also be provided on Twitter by @Swedish and at #SwedishHear, but viewers without Twitter accounts and those who want to see the entire conversation can participate and submit comments and questions at www.swedish.org/SwedishHear.
These live events conclude Swedish’s month-long web series on hearing loss. Since Sept. 11, Swedish has been releasing videos discussing hearing loss and cochlear implant surgery as a way of increasing the availability of online educational resources for those who cannot hear. All videos in the web series feature optional close captioning. The inspiration for the web series stemmed from a lack of educational resources for people looking for solutions to their hearing loss. See: Inspiration for a Cochlear Implant Web Series.
The live-streamed activation will feature Mr. & Mrs. Day as their audiologist, Stacey Watson, guides them through activating Mrs. Day’s cochlear implant.
The live text chats will be hosted by Swedish at www.swedish.org/SwedishHear and will be led by surgeon Dr. Douglas Backous, audiologist Stacey Watson, Karen Utter (president of the Hearing Loss Association of Washington) and Eleanor Day, cochlear implant recipient. The text chats will be moderated and facilitated by Dana Lewis.
